May Giveaway Day - May 27, 2009

May Giveaway Day
May 27, 2009

Ok, I admit it. I am going to turn into a blogging giveaway junkie. This is just a whole lot of fun for me. It's great to have readers come by and leave their comments and I love checking out all of the participating blogs out there. It is amazing how many super talented people are out in cyberspace just waiting for us to come across their blog and share a bit of their world. The fact that there are prizes to be won floating around in all of this is just icing on the cake!

This fun event is being hosted by SewMamaSew. They will be posting a list today with the links to all of the bloggers participating in this great Giveaway. Click here:May Giveaway Day to go to their page and start surfing some awesome and creative blogs.

Entering my drawing is extremely easy. Just leave a comment on this blog entry telling me a memorable crafting/sewing/creative moment or event in your life. I'm using my tried & true old cowgirl hat to draw the number randomly, what you write won't count for the drawing - it's solely for me because I like to hear other people's stories and inspirations. Please be sure that there is a way for me to contact you if you are a winner. The drawing closes at midnight on May 31st. I will draw my winner the next day and post it here. Good luck and happy blog surfing!

I guess I should tell you what I'm giving away. It will be a surprise package full of crafting/sewing supplies & goodies. I haven't really finished throwing together the box so it a surprise to me what will be in it as well! I have quite the stash that would love a new home with someone who is feeling creative..

BTW, if you want an extra entry into my drawing...become a follower or sign up for my email feeds. Then post another comment on this blog and I will give you another chance to win this unknown surprise box!

  15. I have two sewing machines, both found for free. One came from the basement of my husband's old apartment building -it's a beautiful old portable Featherweight. The other is a hardworking Kenmore, found on the side of the road, in need of just a few missing pieces.
If only I could find all my fabric on the side of the road :-)

  16. I'm already a follower and enjoy myself every time I visit.
A favorite memory is when a woman up the valley asked if I'd like to learn to quilt. This coming November makes three years and all of my family, a goodly number of friends and many I'll never meet have been the, hopefully happy, recipients of my hand made quilts.

  17. I haven't been sewing for very long, so I don't have too much to go on, but the biggest moment for me so far has been the day I finished my first garment. I was so happy!

My favorite memory - was when I was kicked out of music class cause I couldn't sing - and my 6th grade teacher took us aside = she taught the girls to embroider and the boys to carve soap...

  36. I love surprises! My most memorable crafting moments would have to be anytime my 6-year-old son joins me. I sew alone most of the time, so he usually wants to do something else. Last night we made stamps out of foam and stamped paper together. I love bonding with him over an art project or craft. It reminds me of when I was young and my mom would do those things with me.

    ReplyDelete

  41. I actually remember creating when I was very young! I remember being at our vacation home in Maine and I was making all kinds of creations from paper plates, pipe cleaners, paint, crayons, and whatever else I could get my hands on! I then gathered all my treasures, laid them out on a table in the dining room and SOLD them to my parents! LOL! I made a KILLING! LOL!

My grandmother gave me some potholders she had crocheted. They are not very intricate, but I love them none the less, because she made them. :)

  43. Oh - I like this question! My favorite crafting moment was when I bought my first sewing machine (just 1 1/2 yrs ago at age 40) and learned how to thread it. That always sounded so intimidating to me! And then of course, sewing my first straight line a few days later. The giveaway sounds awesome!

  45. I love a surprise giveaway, too fun! My favorite crafting memory would have to be making button bracelets from the huge jar of buttons in my grandmother's sewing room.

    ReplyDelete
  46. My most memorable sewing moment was when I walked into home ec class in grade seven wearing the demin skirt I made in class and the matching jacket I made at home. The home ec teacher asked if I made it myself and I was so proud to tell her that yes, I did. I made matching pants from the same pattern but never got the legs sewn right. Twice I sewed it wrong and I got frustrated. My mom finally came to my rescue and I do believe I only wore those pants once. I did get an A+ in home ec.

  47. Two memorable crafting events in my life were when I learned to knit - once when I was eight and my grandma came to visit (I didn't get very far with it that time, but it was fun), and once, more recently, when I tried it again. I like all sorts of crafts (sewing, origami, even a bit of woodworking), but knitting is the one that's become more than a hobby for me.

Recently I had a great time sewing (or trying to sew) a baby blankie made from some leftover 101 Dalmations fabric (with little puppy images on it) while one of my cats laid on top of it. I'm not sure what she was trying to tell me - that it was a comfy blanket or that I was wasting my time working on anything dog-related :-).

  82. I love surprises!

Some of my best memories I guess are of sewing quilts for my kids. I have now made each one a quilt, the first one being when I was brand new to sewing and now I'm on my third child and many years of sewing. Each time I look at their quilts I remember being pregnant with my children along with the memories of sewing their quilts.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I don't know what great crafting moments I have had... but the most bizarre thing that I have made was a patchwork dog-shaped pillow for my friend in high school. It certainly made her laugh.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I have a great memory of a quilt that I just finished. It was a quilt for my grandma, but she passed away before i got it finished. So I was finishing it for my mom. All I had left was to hand stitch the binding on, and I injured my right index finger. I spent 2 days sewing with my thumb and ring finger, but got it to my mom.

    certainly memorable.

  93. I love taking something old/discarded/unwanted, and turning it into a treasure! I got my outdoor porch iron furniture (love seat, swivel rocker and chair) out of my neighbors trash!! A cleaning, about 3 cans of primer and 6 cans of spray paint and it was good as new! I love it I spend many an hour there watching the kids play, playing checkers with my hubby, sharing stories and drinks with friends - one of my favorite places!

  117. OOH, a surprise pkg of sewing goodies, can't beat that ;-)

A memorable crafting experience.... I was about 15 and was sewing something at home,I fed the fabric w/ my thumb too close to the needle and the needle went straight through my thumb, my initial reaction was to jerk away from the machine, which of course I did which in turn meant the needle snapped off in my thumb, I went out hollering to my Mum (who was a dress designer and professional seamstress)and instead of sympathy she told me "Well, you're a true seamsress now." I didn't touch a sewing machine for any length of time until 2 years ago... 25 years later.

    ReplyDelete
  118. It's definately a good memory even though I remember burning my finger on the hot glue gun making a wreath with my mom! (she never really crafted and since that was the only time it's still a good memory!) thanks for the giveaway!

  119. I was taught to sew by a lovely lady who is a retired home economics teacher. I don't really have one particular moment that stands out, but over the course of a year of spending Thursday afternoons with her, I learned a lot about sewing and became addicted. She did not charge me one cent to teach me and I hope to one day pay it forward by teaching someone else this wonderful craft.

  121. Memorable sewing moment- I was attempting to make my first dress ever, for my little baby- without a pattern! It turned out completely adorable but when I went to try it on her it wouldn't even go over her head...poor thing couldn't figure out what in the world I was doing to her. Maybe it would fit a doll.... :) Next time I'll use a pattern..and measure correctly!

  122. One of my earliest sewing projects (I think I was around 12?) was a little spaghetti-strap tanktop that my mom helped me sew. The fabric was white with a really dainty lavender rose print, and my mom let me use a bit of the lace that was leftover from her wedding dress. I loved that shirt!

By the way, I love your doggie pictures! We have a cattle dog too (all red). They are such good dogs. Quirky, but good!

  126. My grandma tried to teach me to crochet when I was in jr. high. She tried so hard, but I am left handed so she finally gave up. But it was so neat spending time with her and seeing how she made her afghans. She was so good. Grab bags are so much fun. Thanks for the chance!

  127. Hmm, most memorable moment would have to be my mum, grandma and great grandma all together, teaching each other various skills/methods etc.

  128. When I made the first thing that I loved - a pretty blouse made of soft flowery fabric(which was far from the the first thing I made) I was so proud. I wore that blouse for years.
Thanks for participating in the giveaway.

  129. My best crafting moment lately was making an owl bag for my son. not an bag with an owl on it...but one for him to carry his best friend owly in (stuffed animal, of course!) he loves it. he picked out the fabric himself and he is so proud to tell everyone we made it together (he is five)
making stuff for kids is the best!

  130. My best memory of crafting is when I took my daughter to a quilt shop with me to pick out some fabric and she was so excited to see all the fabrics and she told me all the ones she liked and why she liked them. She was just so thrilled to be doing this with me. She sat with me, while I worked on my project. I'm teaching her how to do some hand stitching. It has really brought us closer.

  131. Ahh hmm memorable sewing... I love getting together with my girlfriends (two in particular) and sew. I haul my machine and my basket of goodies to their houses and we sew and chat and drink tea. Wow I sound sorta old!! Hehe. Can't wait to see the surprise giveaway!

  132. When I was 7 or so, I made my first stuffed animal, or stuffed blob. I didn't know that you were supposed to turn things inside out while sewing. I remember when I came to this realization, how amazed I was at the cleverness of it all, how someone had that idea to make the edges so nice and smooth.

  133. Oh - I have a goodie! In grade 9, I decided to sew a hoodie for my home ec project. My mother would check all my sewing and if it wasn't to her liking (ie. the top stitching looked awful) she would make me pick it out and do it over. When I handed it in, my teacher didn't believe that I sewed it by myself! My mother came to the school and tried to tell her, but my teacher still didn't believe me! The teacher ended up making me sew a pencil case in front of her (without my mother around). Luckily after I was done she believed me!

All that picking out as a kid forces me to do the same now! If the seam isn't straight - I pick it out. Sometimes it makes for very long projects :)

  134. My daughter is 4 and wants to help me sew but of course, it's a little too complicated for her but i let her cut off the hanging threads from the quilt I'm making and it was memorable and we both had a good time!

  136. How exciting, thank you for the give away. I love crafting and creating just about anything with my BFF of over 20 years who lives 3000 miles away. Our conversations are inspirational and she actually taught me to knit over the phone. Creating things across the miles has kept our relationship as strong as sisters. Blessings.

  137. My favorite creative moment was fairly recently. I am a relatively new sewer and have not done anything too difficult. I recently completed Amy Butler's Betty Shopper. It was certainly the most challenging project I have done and made me feel like I might get the hang of this!

  140. Oh, a surprise - I love a good surprise!

My most inspired crafting moment was watching Brothers & Sisters and thinking - "that logo would work on my sister's wedding invites" (which I was helping her design and make at the time)! I do lots of other crafts but tend to be the "follow the pattern" kind of crafter.

Here's hoping this little Tasmanian will find luck in your cowgirl hat!

  142. I'm a big fan of the "mystery bags". Thanks for participating. I guess my most memorable moment was staying up until 3? 4? in the morning to finish my first quilt. I was a senior in highschool at the time.

  144. I remember getting a group together to help tie a quilt for charity, then going to bind it and finding a machine that wouldn't work. It took so long to get it fixed that when I got it back, I forgot about the quilt and didn't get it finished for YEARS! I still feel bad about that, but luckily I could find a place for it that I feel good about.

  145. My favorite creative moment so far was when we moved into our current home, and I made my dining room curtains. When my husband told me they look like I bought them, I was so thrilled! They are still hanging - 6 years later! Hmmmm, I think it might be time for a change.

Thanks for the great giveaway, I heart surprises!

  146. Thanks for participating! A memory I have is when my mom, sister (who doesn't sew), and I all worked together to hand quilt the first quilt my mom ever made. I remember sitting on the couch with the hoop between us, while the snow fell outside.

  151. I love surprise packages! It's funny, but I've never considered myself a creative person, but I always have had this need to craft: sew, knit, cross stitch, embroider. Maybe I'll have to reevaluate my self image ...

  155. My memory is kind of sad, but I was really into cross stitching when I was in my early 20's. I made lots of gifts then. A few years ago my mom passed away and I had the task of cleaning out her house with my brother and sister. I was amazed that my mom kept everything I every made her. Now those treasures are back in my house. My favorite that I hadn't seen in years was a christmas embroidery wall hanging. :)

  162. The most memorable sewing moment for me is staying up all night long trying to finish my sewing project for 4-H. I accidentally cut a hole in the fabric while sewing a flat felt seem and things took a little longer than I had planned. I finished it though, and got first place even!!

  163. My favorite crafting memory is that my Mom used to give me burlap, yarn and a big plastic needle and I would embroider while she sewed. It's one of my very earliest memories. She still has one of the pieces I made for Mother's Day.

  164. I think my most memorable sewing moments are with my Grandmother. She is the one who taught me how to sew and just sitting with her stitching or learning how to work the machine will always be some of my best memories. Thanks so much for the great giveaway!

  165. Yes, that is the fun of having a big stash so when you need to combine a bundle such as this, you can just browse and select what to put in. Quite recently when I was stippling my parent's Bistro king size quilt, I did it so easily that I was thinking wow - even in the middle of a giant 100x100 inch square quilt it felt like nothing. should try it again LOLZ

  181. Recently I made a simple pin cushion out of some Kaffe Fassett fabric I had. DD saw it and decided it was HERS! She took it to school with her and several of her friends thought it was great and wanted one too. I ended up making a full dozen by the time I was done. Now they want crafting lessons so they can make something to use thier pin cushions with :-)
